The co-operative values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity could easily have been used to write the introduction to the future many envisioned when the World Wide Web went live. Today, almost thirty years later, we are far removed from this vision, ensnared by corporations which profit off of us by controlling and manipulating our data, our thoughts and our feelings.
It is time to break free from the post-truth world of the online corporations. Editorially independent journalism still exists. Quality journalists have banded together and are self-publishing, supported by their readers. Ethically provided email is a reality. Transparent projects like the co-operatively owned and run social.coop offer us a way back to the open, people-focused web which is a central part of an open, people-focused world.
